Watercolour Portrait Course in Moravia

We invite you to an autumn extended weekend dedicated to watercolour portrait painting. Tutor Margarita will reveal clever tips and tricks on how to build a watercolour portrait step by step.

In the course, you will go through the basics of human facial anatomy, shading and shaping, correct proportions... Thanks to this, you will be able to transfer the motif to paper and capture the personality and character of the face. To start, you will try a simple tonal sketch and then move on to a female and male motif.

During the course, you will also learn about suitable materials, tools and watercolour techniques for painting a watercolour portrait.

The course is suitable for beginners as well as for moderately advanced students, but also for advanced beginners who want to acquire new skills in painting this topic.

Date and place:

The course will take place from 31st October to 2nd November in Velké Pavlovice. We will be painting in the studio in the Letohrádek building in the Ekocentra Trkmanka area. There is accommodation reserved for us in the Ecocentre. If you are interested, you will receive a contact from us after the application, where you can arrange your own accommodation according to your preferences. There is a fully equipped kitchenette with a coffee machine, fridge and hob in the Letohrádek building.

FRIDAY
15:00 – arrival and accommodation
16:00 - 19:00 – meeting in the studio, getting to know each other, tools, practicing basic techniques, 1 quick portrait motif

SATURDAY
9:00 – 18:00 painting in the studio (lunch break)
- explanation of the basics of the anatomical structure of the face (individual parts - eyes, nose, lips, etc.), correct procedures for capturing nature, mood and appearance, explanation of the material and methods of their use when painting a portrait, achieving individual effects (using a brush, paper structure, masking fluid, etc.) - accompanied by the following exercises with the application of this knowledge
- Demo 1 - female portrait in ¼ sheet format

SUNDAY
9:00 – 13:00 painting in the studio (without break)
- Demo 2 – male portrait in ¼ sheet format
13:00 – end

For whom the course is intended:

The course is suitable for beginners and advanced students. The minimum number of participants is 6, the maximum is 12.

Price:

The course fee and the use of the Trkmanka Ecocentre studio are included in the price. Ostatní costs - accommodation, meals, transport are arranged and paid by each participant themselves. You can register for the course by adding the course to your basket and paying the course fee. You can buy on the e-shop complete portrait painting package (or select only the part of the tools you are missing after adding them to your cart). Please note that it is not possible to purchase the course and art materials together in one order - you must order the course in a separate order.

What tools you need to bring with you (tools are not included in the price):

- watercolour paints in tubes in artistic quality (for portrait painting you can use your own shades that you are used to, skin shades may vary depending on many characteristics of the person you are painting - age, gender, lighting, etc., we list recommended shades including alternatives): Ultramarine blue/Cobalt blue, Burnt sienna, Raw sienna/Ochre/Quinacridone gold, cold red (e.g. Alizarin Crimson/Carmine/Madder lake), Indigo (Daniel Smith)/Indanthrene blue, bright pink (Opera pink, Quinacridone rose/Quinacridone pink), Perylen Violet
- we also list shades that are not necessary to have, but will be used during individual demonstrations: Lavender, Emerald green, Turquoise, Cerulean blue, Payne´s grey, Neutral tint, Titanium white
- at least 5 pcs of watercolour papers 1/4 sheet (100% cotton, CP, 300g ) – format 28x38 (not too rough, e.g. Magnani, Hahnemuhle)
- Brushes: 1 large mop or flat brush made of natural/very fine synthetic bristles that holds a lot of water; a round synthetic brush that holds its point well; a synthetic brush with a French binding (e.g. Da Vinci Casaneo No. 2); a smaller brush for details; if you have and like to use them, calligraphic brushes are welcome
- soft pencil and plastic eraser
- water container
- water spray
- pallet with large washable surface (ideally plastic)
- paper towels/tissues/sponge
- backing board (ideally a non-absorbent surface, e.g. plastic)
- masking tape 2,5-3 cm wide

Cancellation Policy: If you cancel your participation more than one week before the start of the course, you will be refunded in full or offered a place on another course. If you cancel less than one week before the course starts, you will be charged 100% of the cancellation fee. The course organiser reserves the right to cancel a course if there are insufficient numbers of participants. In this case you will be offered a place on another course or a full refund.
